We interviewed survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime — a catastrophic period during which Cambodian schools were eliminated and educated Cambodians were killed. These incredible elders not only show the resilience of the human spirit, but also the powerful way Room to Read's Literacy Program has revitalized their community.

ヨウレンは、カンボジアの貧しい家庭に生まれましたが、2011年に女子教育プログラム生に選ばれ、2017年に高校を卒業しました。2年間の奨学金を得て、2018年5月からタイの大学に入学します。厳しい状況でもあきらめず勉強を続けてきたヨウレンの夢は、カンボジアの自分より若い世代に自分の経験をシェアし、機会に恵まれない子ども達をサポートすること、社会や国に貢献していくことです。

Growing up in a rural region, Saluom wanted to learn to read and write just so she wouldn't get lost. She didn't ponder education much beyond that. But after transferring to a new school and discovering Room to Read's Girls' Education Program, her ambitions changed. Motivation grew as did her opportunities. With the program's support, Saluom harnessed life skills that would not only help her push through a family tragedy, but also thrive in the big city of Siem Reap, where she's currently attending university.
